A couple who had their car smashed by a drunk driver during a birthday party was shot and killed by police in downtown downtown Dallas, authorities said Friday.

Police were searching for the man, a 32-year-old Dallas man, after they responded to a call of a vehicle that had been stolen.

The shooting occurred about 1:40 a.m.

Thursday at a house on the 1300 block of West State Street, where a man had been drinking, Dallas Police Department spokesman Sgt. Greg Wilkins said.

Officers arrived and saw a man running away from the scene, Wilkins added.

A bullet hit the man in the upper chest and was found in the rear-view mirror of the vehicle, he said.

The man, identified as the husband, died at the scene.

The wife, identified only as Jane Doe, was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Police have not released the man’s name.

The couple were celebrating a birthday when they were hit by a vehicle, Wilkin said.

They drove to a gas station and purchased alcohol, then got into a fight with the man inside the vehicle.

The car was then damaged in the fight, Wilcox said.

Witnesses said the couple got out of the car and confronted the driver.

Witnesses said the man was intoxicated.

Dallas police said the shooting was accidental and there was no evidence the couple had been driving under the influence.

The couple had bought drinks at a local gas station, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police are looking into the incident, Wilbysonsaid.

A woman who was at the party said the car was smashed in.

“They were drinking, I guess,” she said.

“I don’t know how much they were drinking.

We had a lot of fun.

They were just having a good time.”
